Don’t fall for scareware!

Scareware is malicious software that pops up a message telling you that your computer is infected with malware and you must follow a link or select a button to fix the problem. If this happens to you, do not follow any links within the popup! Users who fall victim to this trick allow in malware, ransomware, and malicious programs that can turn off antivirus protections and allow for a larger attack.

If you see a suspicious pop-up, stop and contact your IT department immediately. Your IT staff will walk you through the steps to safely exit the browser and then scan your computer. Just exiting the page may not be enough, so if this happens to you, be sure to report it to your IT staff.

See our Cyber Center for additional resources and links for cyber alerts, and contact CTREmergencyNotification@mass.gov with any incidents or suspected incidents of fraud or cyber attacks.
