Heightened Alert – It’s Election Time!
It is anticipated that cyber attacks through emails, social media and phone calls will increase substantially prior to the upcoming election. Staff should be on alert to avoid opening malicious emails or attachments or providing credentials over the phone. Malicious emails and phone calls may appear to be legitimate and not about the election. Also at this time, social media traffic will intensify significantly and criminals will use bots and other artificial intelligence to send out eye-catching items. Some tips for staff:
Continue to follow normal protocols and cautions for checking emails and attachments before responding or opening. Be especially careful with any emails with attachments (such as invoices) or asking for immediate action.
Be careful of social media posts encouraging you to click on pictures or links. Make sure to hover over links to determine if the link is legitimate. When in doubt don’t click!
Please notify your IT department immediately if you think you may have opened a malicious email or link to ensure that your equipment has not been infected, since this may travel into your agency network. Infections do not always impact your equipment immediately but are designed to spread ransomware and other malicious software.
