Important message from EOTSS regarding statewide VPN access

The following is important guidance from the Executive Office of Technology and Security Services (EOTSS) regarding VPN access at this time of increased access.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Employees must be enrolled in Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to use VPN. Enrolling in MFA also requires connection to a Commonwealth Network.

When logging into the new VPN, employees must use enter their Commonwealth user name/email addresses (your.email@mass.gov, firstname.lastname@massmail.state.ma.us, or something like firstname.lastname@tre.state.ma.us.

Verizon VPN

The Verizon VPN continues to experience performance issues due to the high demand from users. Until Verizon is able to expand our bandwidth, we need your help to mitigate the demand and to alleviate the bandwidth issues. We also need employees to be conscientious and conservative in how they are using the VPN.

Here is what you can do to help:

  • Review the list of employees with VPN and identify any that may not be performing critical functions.

  • Send your users the guidelines below on how to use VPN conservatively.

1. Only use VPN when it’s needed. You DON’T need VPN to access:

2. Consider shifting some of the work you are doing on VPN to off-peak hours. Current peak usage is between 6:00am and 6:00pm. Also, MMARS is available as early as 5:00 A.M., and the Office of the Comptroller is expanding evening and weekend availability to reduce peak traffic.

3. Connect to VPN to do what you need and then remember to disconnect so someone else can do the work they need to get done. For example, if you need to grab files from your desktop, use the VPN then jump off to relieve network congestion. If you have OneDrive, consider moving files there.

4. Remind your co-workers about this on internal calls or meetings.

Mass Telework Knowledge Base

This will serve as the repository for content on how to access, install, and use the tools and technology EOTSS is providing to help Commonwealth employees work remotely. The content is relevant to both IT users and end users.

Content will be added as it becomes available so check back for frequent updates.

New EOTSS VPN Instructions

The Knowledge Base is updated with instructions on how to download, install and use the new EOTSS VPN client and Remote Desktop Connection (RDP). End users permitted to use personal devices should follow the same instructions.
