Widespread Data Breach: Simple Steps to Secure Your Accounts

CTR Compliance Corner

Cybersecurity experts discovered a leak of over 16 billion login credentials, including URLs, email addresses, usernames and passwords from platforms including Google, Facebook, Apple, social media, and some government sites. It’s the largest data breach ever and includes information from over 30 different sources.

Fraudsters may use this data for phishing emails, texts and phone calls trying to get you to share your login info. Phishing emails are sophisticated; be extra cautious with messages that seem like they’re from trusted sources.

Action Steps:

• Change your passwords, prioritizing accounts like Office 365, email, banking apps (bank accounts, PayPal, Venmo, Apple IDs) and social media.
• Create new, long, strong and unique passwords for every account.
• Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all accounts, which adds an extra layer of security.
