Uptick in Fraudulent Direct Deposit Change Requests

The text "Cybersecurity Tip of the Week"

The Office of the Comptroller is seeing an uptick statewide in the number of fraudulent change requests for direct deposit of payroll. Important to note: false requests can come from an employee’s state email address. In one recent example, a department noticed a change request coming from the email account of an employee out on leave who had not made a change in ten years.

Payroll teams are reminded to verify any payment routing information changes directly with the person making the request. In this remote working environment, face-to-face virtual meetings are recommended to verify the authenticity of the request.

Passwords should also be changed immediately on any email accounts that have been breached.

Please contact [email protected] with any such incidents.
